英國最大超市樂購關閉數十家門店
For Britain’s biggest retailer, the fight back starts here. After its worst ever years through a criminal investigation into its accounting,plunging profits and the sacking of its boss, Tesco today outlined plans to win back lost customers. With UK sales during the 6 weeks to January 3rd down by 0.3%, its new boss notes the need for change is urgent.

Tesco is cutting prices on hundreds of branded food products in an effort to compete more aggressively with discounters such as Aldi & Little. And prices aren’t the only thing he’s cutting. Mr. Lewis’ plans involve axing around 90 stores which are either already open or in development, closing the company’s Hertfordshire head office, its home for 42 years, shutting the final salary pension scheme and shedding thousands of jobs. In all, the measures will save 250 million pounds annually but at a one-off cost of 300 million pounds. Shareholders will not be excluded from the coal with the final dividend for this year also being abandoned. Investors still saw enough room for optimism today however to send Tesco shares up.

I think it certainly got a huge step in the right direction in terms of the things that Tesco can actually control, clearly in the UK market in particular, there’s lots of issues that Tesco cannot control which is, like shopper behavior, they are drifting to the discount retailers. And yeah, lots of the other different shopping behaviors we’ve seen over the last 18 months.

Tesco says it will award bonuses to all employees based on the success of the company’s transformation plan. Mr. Lewis’ priority is to restore confidence among Tesco’s customers, investors and employees. And there’s no doubt he’s being bold. Some of the mega-stores which became an emblem of the company’s dominance are expected to close. But galvanizing his workforce with so many jobs at risk will be far from easy.

By signaling that the declining sale is beginning to tail off, the new boss has bought himself some time. But turning around the fortunes of a corporate basket case on the scale of Tesco will be a marathon rather than a sprint if it can be achieved at all.
