Child care costs careers in South Korea
Ahn Ji-sun is 38. She gave up her career three years ago to be a stay-at-home mum after her second child was born. She's not alone. South Korean government data shows that more than one in five women of working age are leaving their jobs after getting married or having children, and not necessarily because they want to.
Ahn Ji-sun
(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) 38-YEAR-OLD AHN JI-SUN, WHO LEFT HER JOB AFTER HAVING HER SECOND CHILD, SAYING: "If there had been some good quality childcare services, and people who could take care of my child, I could have easily persuaded my family, who were opposed to me working."
Pay is also little incentive for women to work. In 2012 women's salaries were just 65 per cent of their male counterparts. That difference is one of the biggest amongst developed countries. Women leaving their jobs and shrinking the workforce will become a problem for South Korea's ageing population. But some companies are trying to improve the situation. At Haan Corp, which makes steam-cleaning products, Chief Executive Romi Haan says mothers who return after giving birth automatically get an above-average performance rating as a boost.
(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) CEO OF HAAN CORP, ROMI HAAN, SAYING: "Our company tries to support women so that they are not considered to be parents who don't take care of their children well because they work hard."
The South Korean government says it will set up a $46 million fund to help promote future female business leaders. But a crisis is already looming. The working-age population is set to begin declining next year.
