Finland’s shopping tourism hit as Russians stay at home

Nestled in south east Finland, this town was the first stop in Europe for many Russian shoppers. For the past two decades Lappeenranta, just 30 kilometres from the Russian border, has been booming with tourists from the east. But now it's struggling. Signs advertise the latest sales but few shoppers roam the aisles.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHAIRMAN OF CITY COUNCIL OF LAPPEENRANTA, HEIKKI JARVENPAA, SAYING: "We have calculated that Russian tourists have created about 2,600 working places in Lappeenranta, I mean in normal times. But today the situation is different, and I guess that we should decrease by about thousand, one thousand working places."

Russia's weaker rouble and a sanctions dispute between the European Union and Moscow is taking a big bite out of the local economy. Out of two million foreign tourists visiting Lappeenranta a year, 1.5 million were Russian. But over the past three months that number has decreased by about 40 percent. Luxury retailers are now closing their doors and staff are being cut. Where the Russians used to buy designer handbags and fur coats now they buy food.

As the rouble continues to slide fewer and fewer Russians can afford the euro -- even to buy inexpensive goods -- and the town's important source of revenue will remain frozen.

Search resumes for AirAsia plane

It's an international effort. Boats and planes from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Indonesia head out to an area in the Java Sea where the missing AirAsia jet, is believed to be. It's been one day since flight QZ8501 disappeared with 162 people on board. Rescue teams have been searching for any signs of the aircraft since contact was lost roughly halfway through the Indonesian flight to Singapore. The pilots had requested a course change due to bad weather but did not send any distress call.

It can be expanded based on evaluation."

As police guard outside the makeshift AirAsia crisis centre, relatives inside cope with their grief. They had waved goodbye to their loved ones confident they would see them again. Now they are searching for answers to find out what is their fate.

Snow and ice traps those hoping to hit the slopes in Bavaria

Next to white-out conditions in southern Germany Sunday where snowfall is disrupting travelers hoping to hit the slopes of the Bavarian mountains. Manuela Ott says the traffic was a struggle, but the payoff like none other.

A wait well worth it for these pups enjoying the fluffy powder, almost as much as the skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes. German forecasters say the snowy conditions aren't unusual for this time of year, but they could make driving dangerous due to the number of vehicles on the road.
