World rings in New Year
New Zealanders are among the first in the world to usher in the New Year - with a fireworks display at Auckland's landmark Sky Tower that sent bright colors erupting through the night sky over the city's harbor. An estimated one-and-a-half million people lined Australia's Sydney Harbor at the stroke of midnight for a spectacular show involving seven tons of fireworks over the Harbor Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Japanese revelers welcome 2015 by releasing hundreds of balloons in front of Tokyo Tower. Fireworks explode off Taiwan's tallest skyscraper. And North Korea stages a 15 minute long fireworks display in Pyongyang -- watched by thousands-- although no sign of that country's leader. And then there's Bolivia - where folks are flocking to shops and street markets to find the perfect pair of lucky underwear to welcome 2015. In accordance with their annual tradition, Bolivians swap their old underwear for red or yellow undergarments at midnight in the hopes of ushering in a prosperous new year. Red is believed to bear love, while yellow is thought to bring money.
Hopes for better economic times on New Year's Eve in Moscow
Hopes for better times on New Year's Eve in Moscow, after the Russian rouble takes a hit. But that doesn't let revelers bring them down... as they count down to new days ahead.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MOSCOW RESIDENT, ELENA, SAYING: "When you have nothing you can't lose anything either!" The country is sliding into an economic recession as oil prices plummet.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MOSCOW RESIDENT, ALEXANDER, SAYING: "I am trying to avoid making a value judgment. So whether it was good or bad, we are trying to step away from it making judgment. We are simply living. We are trying to live in the moment."
The rouble lost some 40 percent to the U.S. dollar in 2014. With hopes in Moscow that the New Year will usher in better economic times
Times Square crowds brave the cold to wait for midnight celebration
New Years revelers showing they're determined to get the best seats for the midnight celebration. It's freezing cold and many hours to go until the ball drops, but some will not be denied.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHELSEA CHIFICI SAYING: "I'm hoping so. I'm really cold already and I have four jackets on and four pairs of pants and I have four blankets and leg-warmers. So, I'm hoping that I don't freeze or I get too hungry, but I think I'm good!"
More than 1 million partiers are expected tonight, spread out over more than 20 city blocks. The NYPD screening process has already started -- but some are already getting into the party mood despite the cold. Not everyone thinks they'll make it all the way.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) DANIEL BEISSER SAYING: "Oh, that depends on my father because I think we're not going to make it because he's not interested in waiting all day long here. But, me and my sister maybe. Yeah."
But those that do stay hope their perseverance will be rewarded once the show gets going.
