Sierra Leone lags in Ebola fight, but U.N. says tide is turning

The UN says that Sierra Leone is making progress in treating Ebola patients -- that's despite missing targets in fighting the disease. Both Guinea and Liberia have met targets. But in Sierra Leone is a mixed picture says David Nabarro, who is heading the U.N. response to Ebola.

Antony Banbury who heads the UN's Ebola emergency response mission says there are signs of hope.

Signs of progress come as the World Health Organziation said Monday that almost 6,000 people have died from Ebola -- mostly in West Africa.

On Monday, Kiev halted payments to municipal workers and pensioners in rebel-held regions of the country's east. Those payments will be held until the region comes under government control again. Meanwhile, classes go on. But for teachers it is a new life lesson.

Kiev and the West accuse Russia of destabilizing Ukraine by providing the rebels with money, arms and reinforcements. The West, in turn, imposed sanctions on Moscow. As they brace for winter in the east, an emergency worker says she will do her job whether or not she is paid.

Damage control in Malibu, California, after the heaviest rainfall in more than a year hit Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Crews are clearing what they can after mudslides forced the shutdown of six miles of the Pacific Coast Highway. Patrick Chandler who is a spokesperson for the California Department of Transportation says it may get worse.
