Accident reported at Ukrainian power plant
烏克蘭核電站發生事故
Ukraine's government says a problem has occured at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in the country's south-east. The accident, reportedly caused by a short circuit, has reduced the country's power supply, worsening an already serious power shortage brought about by months of fighting between the government and Russian separatists.But Ukraine's Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn insists the malfunction does not pose a threat to public safety:

Even so, the reports have reminded many of the deadly 1986 Chernobyl disaster, also in Ukraine. The International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna says it has no comment on this latest incident.

Netanyahu seeks early election, fires top ministers

Tuesday night, many Israelis were glued to their TV sets. In a prime time news conference, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he sacked his finance and justice ministers, announced plans to dissolve parliament, and opened the way for early national elections.

Netanyahu's government has been unraveling over an array of issues … including the budget and a bill to codify the Jewish national identity that critics say discriminates against Arab Israelis. Tuesday's announcement signals the breakup of his bickering coalition government, which came to power only last year. But for some Israelis, the day's drama was just political theater.

Venezuela indicts opposition leader Machado, alleging plot to kill Maduro

A show of support as Venezuela's opposition leader Maria Corina Machado leaves the Prosecutor's office -- despite her indictment on charges that she was part of a plot to kill President Nicolas Maduro. Something she firmly denies:

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) OPPOSITION LEADER, MARIA CORINA MACHADO, SAYING: "I was just indicted for the crime of conspiracy. It is a crime that has penalty of up to 16 years in prison. All of it, absolutely all of the accusations, the supposed evidence, are false. I reject them."

She says these accusations are a charade, meant to silence her, and distract Venezuelans from a growing economic crisis. Earlier this year, Machado was at the forefront of major street protests against Maduro's socialist government. Something the opposition's radical wing praises Machado for, saying she stands up for what they consider a dictatorship. According to one of Machado's advisors, Caracas authorities have not ordered her immediate detention.
