Mexican mayor suspected in abduction of 43 students captured

A fugitive former Mexican mayor and his wife were captured from this house in a Mexico City neighborhood on Tuesday. Jose Luis Abarca, former mayor of Iguala and his wife Maria de los Angeles Pineda are suspected to be the masterminds behind the abduction of 43 trainee teachers in September. Four members of a drug gang, also from Iguala ,and dozens of officers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the disappearances . Some hope the mayor's arrest will shed light on the whereabouts of the missing students.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) FATHER OF MISSING STUDENT, FELIPE DE LA CRUZ, SAYING: "All of us parents heard about the news at dawn. We want to say it's something that cheers us up a bit because we know this was the missing piece. If the federal authorities have completed the jigsaw puzzle, then this means we are closer to finding the students. What happens after they have given their statements, will lead us to where they are."

Heavy rain welcomed in Sao Paolo

This is usually the kind of rain you wish would go away. But despite the flooded streets, residents of Sao Paolo, Brazil are welcoming heavy rainstorms this week. The area is in the middle of its worst drought in 80 years. Thirty-five municipalities in Sao Paolo state have had to ration water and millions of residents have seen their taps run dry. The main reservoir feeding the area is at just 3.4 percent capacity. This week's rain stopped it from going even lower but meteorlogists say even with more rain on the way it won't be enough to fill the reservoir up again.

Days of heavy rain in Argentina's Buenos Aires province have turned these streets into rivers, sparing neither man nor beast. The fast-moving waters even buried a section of highway about 70 miles from the country's capital. Residents were forced to wade through almost-waist high waters, while others used small boats. Some used styrofoam rafts to transfer possessions they had managed to salvage from the floods. The floods shut down a 150 schools in the area. Authorities reported that over 5,000 people across 23 districts had been evacuated.
