Rebel leader votes in east Ukraine
烏克蘭東部叛軍領(lǐng)導人投票
Eastern Ukraine's separatist leader Alexander Zakharchenko casts his ballot in an election he's almost certain to win. Pro-Russian rebels say the vote will legitimise its leadership and take their war-torn region closer to Russia. But Western powers say they won't recognise it. Kiev's pro-European government insists the election violates the ceasefire protocol between the rebels and Ukrainian troops. Zakharchenko says the vote will go ahead.

Today, we're going to have the election, and we'll see Kiev's reaction and start from there."

Kiev says the agreement, signed by both sides in September, states that the Ukrainian government will appoint local officials to the region. Sunday's election is likely to worsen tensions in a conflict that's killed nearly 4,000 people in fighting since April.

A brief truce in a fragile ceasefire -- Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists agree to swap 25 fighters from each side. The exchange in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine is one of several since fighting officially stopped in September. It's unclear how many prisoners are being held by either side.

Government troops and rebels have been locked in conflict since April, when pro-Russian separatists declared "people's republic" in eastern Ukraine. Nearly 4,000 people have died in the fighting.

Dozens killed in suspected suicide bombing on Pakistan-India border

The dead arrive in droves in Lahore, Pakistan, after officials say a suicide bomber blew himself up on the country's border with India. Authorities say the blast killed at least 45 people and wounded up to 70 more. The Sunday evening blast came just after a daily ceremony when troops from both sides simultaneously lower the two nations' flags. Hundreds visit the Wagah border crossing each day for the ceremony. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the suspected attack.
