Thousands stage anti-government protest in Madrid
馬德里數千人發動反政府抗議活動
Thousands march through the streets of Madrid. They are protesting against austerity, high unemployment and political corruption, after more than four years of government cutbacks. Many feel these measures have done little to help those at the bottom of society.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) PROTESTER AND STUDENT IN MADRID, KARLA, SAYING: "We want a viable country in order to be able to have life projects. We want to recover public services, we want to recover the universal health care we used to have. We want a dignified life in this country. The youth jobless rate is 54 percent in this country. This is shameful."

Corruption scandals, including the discovery that a health minister had taken kickbacks, have driven many on to the streets. They've also pushed voters into the arms of the new radical Podemos party which has raced ahead in opinion polls since being formed just ten months ago.With an election coming up next year, Spain's ruling conservative government will be watching developments on the streets closely.

Police officer at center of unrest in Ferguson, Missouri resigns

Officer Darren Wilson who shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, has handed in his letter of resignation, his attorney said on Saturday. The resignation was "effective immediately." Violent protests erupted in the city of Ferguson, Missouri where the 18-year-old Brown was shot and killed this summer. More riots broke out after a grand jury decided not to indict officer Wilson earlier this week. Mr. Wilson said in a statement that while he would have liked to continue working as a police officer, his decision to step down was for the safety of the community and of the police force.

French Riviera flash floods kill four

Firemen in southeastern France search for the missing after flash floods. At least four people are dead and several others unaccounted for after violent rain storms and floods pounded France's Mediterranean coast.

Hundreds of firefighters and police have been mobilized since Thursday. In the town of La Londe Les Maures, where two of the dead were found, the mayor says the city is doing what it can to build dikes and stop this from happening again. Forecasters have downgraded their severe weather warnings, but more than a dozen districts in the south of France and Corsica, too, can expect heavy rains and winds until Saturday.
