Obama hails economic record during State of the Union

It's "time to turn the page" from recession and war... That was U.S. President Barack Obama's message during Tuesday's State of the Union speech.

...and urged the Republican-led Congress to back him as he seeks higher taxes on the rich and trade deals with Europe and Asia. On war, Obama said the U.S. had learned some costly lessons, and was now partnering with other countries to go after extremists, including Islamic State --or ISIL.

AirAsia plane climbed 'rapidly': Transport Minister

Indonesia's Transport Minister Ignatius Jonan says the AirAsia plane that crashed in December was climbing at a speed of nearly two thousand metres per minute in its final moments.

For a commercial flight to climb 1,000 to 2,000 feet is a tremendous amount because it is not designed to be able to rise so rapidly."

Investigators are analysing data from the flight recorders to find out exactly what happened. 162 people were on board the plane flying from Surabaya to Singapore. It crashed into the Java Sea about 30 minutes after take-off. Search teams are now focussing their efforts on bringing back the plane's fuselage as well as the victims' dead bodies.

Calls for the Haitian President to resign are not dying down, as the country slips into a political crisis. To try to end weeks of protests,Michel Martelly promised the opposition last Sunday that he'd create a consensus government. But he's kept some ministers in the same positions, and placed his allies in others. The unhappiness with Martelly's leadership isn't contained to the street protests.
