Cubans ready for first round of diplomatic talks with U.S.

As Cuba prepares for diplomatic talks with the U.S. this week... ...people on the streets of Havana say they're optimistic.
古巴正在準備本周與美國的外交對話,哈瓦那街頭的人們表示,他們很樂觀 。
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) GRISEL MARQUEZ, SAYING: "In unity there is strength, and we think that everything is going to be much better."

Last month, President Barack Obama announced plans to normalize relations with Cuba's communist government... after more than five decades of hostility. Economist Joaquin Infante says renewed ties will benefit Cuba's economy.

The historic diplomatic talks start Wednesday in Havana and will be led by top U.S. diplomat for Latin America, Roberta Jacobson. The U.S. will urge Cuba to lift travel restrictions on U.S. diplomats and agree to establish embassies.

Ferry crew appeals sentences
韓國船只沉沒船員對判決提起上訴
The captain and other crew members of the South Korean ferry Sewol arrived in court Tuesday for the first day of their appeals hearing. Captain Lee Joon-seok was amongst the first rescued when the overloaded ferry capsized in April of last year. 304 people were killed- 250 of them were school children. Video of the crew abandoning the vessel after telling passengers to remain in their cabins caused a public outcry. Outside the court family members of the victims denounced the crew. Whenever I open the door to my son's room, this woman said, I still pray my child is sitting at his desk. Lee was sentenced to 36 years on negligence charges. An engineer is serving 30 years for homicide after failing to help two injured colleagues. The remaining crew were also handed prison terms ranging from five to 20 years.

Malawi floods destroy homes and crops as death toll nears 200

Floods in the southern region of Malawi have killed at least 176 people and displaced more than 100,000 people, according to UN relief agencies. Large swathes of land remain submerged under water, destroying thousands of acres of crops and raising fears of a cholera outbreak. Roads and bridges have been swept away... no match for the torrential downpour that has left thousands in this African nation without access to food and clean water. And they're not yet in the clear... Malawi's weather service is warning of more heavy rain in the next two to three weeks.
