Evidence of life on Mars? NASA rover finds methane, organic chemicals
Could it be evidence that there was once life on Mars? NASA's Curiosity rover has found spikes of methane in the Martian atmosphere, a gas that on Earth is strongly tied to life. The rover also found organic chemicals in a soil sample collected by a robotic drill. They are the latest findings as NASA hunts for clues about the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Last week, scientists determined that billions of years ago, a lake filled the 96-mile-wide crater being explored by Curiosity. The finding was another hint that Mars, the planet most like Earth in the solar system, was once suitable for microbial life. The rover has traveled around 5 miles since landing on Mars in August of 2012. It has been exploring an area where rocks have been found containing water-deposited sediments to learn if the life-friendly environments actually existed long enough for life to evolve.
American Airlines plane makes emergency landing in Japan
An American Airlines plane flying to the U.S. had to make an emergency landing in Tokyo after hitting severe turbulence. Several people were injured. Passengers said the plane dropped suddenly and rocked for half a minute.

The turbulence was caused by a winter storm in northern Japan that's brought heavy snow and winds gusting at typhoon speeds. Japanese media say more than 300 flights have been cancelled across the country.

Britain expects Ebola breakthrough in Sierra Leone in 4-6 weeks
Sierra Leone is the hardest hit West African nation by the deadly Ebola virus. Now Britain plans to intensify efforts in the former British colony where the virus is spreading fastest -- although it has slowed in recent weeks. More than half the 18,000 confirmed cases of Ebola have been detected in Sierra Leone. UK International Development Secretary Justine Greening is hoping to turn the tide.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UK INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT SECRETARY, JUSTINE GREENING, SAYING: "Transmission rates are already falling, but we should be absolutely clear that there is a long way to go in this battle against Ebola. As we are getting out there into the districts, you're seeing the numbers rise because we're getting a truer picture of just how bad this disease is. So you will see more work, more effort going in over the coming months."

The British military has nearly 800 soldiers in Sierra Leone and has opened six Ebola treatment centers since early November, although Sierra Leone's government has complained this is too slow.
