Japan culls 4,000 chickens after bird flu outbreak

Government officials arrive at a poultry farm in western Japan with a grisly task. They are here to cull roughly 4,000 chickens after three of the birds tested positive for H5, a highly contagious form of bird flu. According to local media, officials have pledged to finish the entire culling and disinfecting process in one day.

Back on the farm the birds are buried in the ground. Farmers in the area will now have to wait to see whether the cull is enough to avoid a repeat of a massive outbreak of the disease four years ago in which around a million chickens were eventually slaughtered.

Monday police came up empty handed an continued their manhunt. CBS news is reporting that Stone and his recently estranged wife were having bitter custody battles over their two young daughters. Local media say Stone suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. He was deployed at least once to Iraq. Police say Stone should be considered armed and dangerous and are asking anyone with information to call authorities immediately.

Security forces storm Sydney cafe under siege, injured removed

Gunfire and loud bangs at the scene of a hostage siege in Sydney... as heavily armed officers storm a cafe in the heart of the financial district. That's where a gunman -- identified as an Iranian refugee -- had been holding an unknown number of hostages for over 16 hours. One media outlet said the gunman and one other person were killed in the siege. The early morning raid on Tuesday appeared to be the end of a standoff that sent shockwaves around the country ... just when people were turning their attention to the Christmas holiday. Moments before the storming, several hostages appeared to flee the scene. At least five more had fled or escaped the cafe earlier in the day, but about 15 others were still thought to be holed up inside. Within minutes of police storming, medics moved in and began removing the injured. It wasn't immediately clear if that included the gunman himself. He was identified just a little earlier as Man Haron Monis, a self-styled sheikh facing multiple charges of sexual assault. Local media say he was also convicted in 2012 of sending threatening letters to families of Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan. During the siege, Monis forced hostages to hold up an Islamic flag, igniting fears that this was a jihadist attack. The standoff came as Australia remains on high alert for home-grown militants returning from fighting in the Middle East.
