Typhoon Hagupit tears through Philippines, at least 3 dead
Typhoon Hagupit pounded the central Philippines, Sunday, causing floods, toppling trees and cutting power lines. And now, officials confirm at least three people have died. Howling winds and rain destroyed houses, roofs were ripped off and many thatched homes were lifted and then dumped a few feet away. And the National Disaster Agency says it isn't over yet:
(SOUNDBITE) (Filipino) NATIONAL DISASTER AGENCY SPOKESPERSON, ALEXANDER PAMA, SAYING: "(Typhoon Hagupit's) path nearest to Metro Manila, where the eye will be, is around 8 p.m. tomorrow as it moves northwest."
Authorities say this typhoon did not appear as destructive as last year's Typhoon Haiyan, in part due to a massive operation that evacuated more than 1 million residents from coastal and landslide-prone areas.
Island residents of Sierre Leone receive food aid
In Ebola-stricken Sierre Leone, this helicopter food drop is a sight for sore eyes. The British army delivered 22 tons of food and supplies, provided by the U.N., to the country's Turtle Islands. This is normally a paradise tourist hot spot ... famed for its fish trade. But the worst ever Ebola outbreak on record is hampering the movement of people and goods across the region. So the islanders, say U.N. World Food Program officials, just can't get to the markets on their boats any more.
(SOUNDBITE)(English) SENIOR PROGRAM ASSISTANT AT WORLD FOOD PROGRAM, ZAINAB MANSARAY, SAYING: "With the Ebola situation this has been put to a stop, they cannot travel. In fact the fishes they have, which they have already catch from the sea, cannot be sold for them to have exchange of food."
Hundreds of islanders will get this aid ... rice, cereals, flour and oil. Just four Ebola cases have been reported in this district. But Sierre Leone as a whole is among the hardest hit nations in the current outbreak ... one that's already claimed some 6,200 lives across West Africa.
Ukrainians bury time capsule at destroyed war memorial
Braving frigid temperatures and brisk wind these Ukrainians arrive at a destroyed World War II monument in Donetsk. A soldier's boot stands tall among the debris -- the scene of fierce fighting last August, when separatists retook the strategic overlook from government troops. Some residents say they'd gladly donate money to see a chapel constructed in its place:
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SNEZHNOYE RESIDENT TATIANA RUDYK, SAYING: "We want our monument to be reconstructed and a new monument to be built for those boys who were killed here, who gave their lives for us, our children, for our parents."
But until then, a ceremony... to remember the pro-Russian separatists killed in the conflict here. Complete with a time capsule, with the names of the dead buried in the earth -- a symbolic reminder of those who lost their lives in the fight for land.
