US extradition request for Polanski denied by Poland - lawyer

A US extradition request for Roman Polanski is denied by Poland, according to the filmmaker's lawyers. Polanski, director of classics including "Rosemary's Baby" and "Chinatown", is planning to shoot a film in Krakow, a city where he spent part of his childhood. In 1977, he pled guilty to having unlawful sex with 13-year-old girl during a photoshoot in Los Angeles, fueled by champagne and drugs. He served 42 days in jail as part of a 90-day plea bargain the same year. He fled the US the following year, believing the judge hearing his case could overrule the deal and put him in jail for years. In 2009, he was arrested in Switzerland on a 31-year-old U.S. warrant and was placed under house arrest. He was freed in 2010 after Swiss authorities decided not to extradite him to the United States.

Burkina army chief announces creation of transitional government

Thick smoke covers the streets of Ouagadougou - after angry demonstrators in Burkina Faso set the parliament on fire, protesting President Blaise Compaore's bid to extend his 27 year rule by amending the constitution. As the violence erupted, the government abandoned its plans -but the protests continued, prompting the military to step in. The spokesman for the head of Burkina Faso's armed forces announced the creation of a national transitional government, although he did not say who would lead it.

At least three protesters were shot dead and scores were wounded by security forces as crowds tried to storm various state buildings. It is not immediately possible to confirm the whereabouts of President Compaore, who seized power in the gold and cotton-producing West African nation in a coup 27 years ago.

More than 100 killed in Sri Lanka landslide

More than 24 hours after a landslide swallowed the village of Haldumulla in south-central Sri Lanka, rescuers are still searching for survivors, although hopes of finding anyone alive are diminishing. More than a hundred people are confirmed dead, buried by an avalanche of mud and rubble.. Among the survivors were children who were away at school when the rain-soaked hillside gave way. But for many others there was no chance of escape.

The landslide buried about 150 houses, forcing the villagers to take shelter in a nearby school building--and begin the agonizing wait for news about their missing loved ones.
