Fifteen seconds after liftoff, an explosion brought an unmanned Antares rocket falling to the ground Tuesday night. A fireball lit up the sky at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Officials expressed disappointment in the launch failure but gratitude that no one was injured.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) FRANK CULBERTSON, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF ADVANCED PROGRAMS GROUP AT ORBITAL SCIENCES CORP.,SAYING: "It's a tough time to lose a launch vehicle like this and its payload. It's not as tragic as losing a life associated with it so we're very happy to report there were no injuries and the safeguards both in flight and on the ground worked as they should have and all we lost was hardware."
The incident marked the first accident since NASA turned to private operators to deliver cargo to the International Space Station. This rocket was built and launched by Orbital Sciences Corporation, which said it would conduct a thorough investigation. Officials say the damage appears limited to the launch facility and the rocket but won't know the full extent until daylight.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) BILL WROBEL, DIRECTOR OF NASA'S WALLOPS FLIGHT FACILITY, SAYING: "Basically we've set up a perimeter as a result of it being dark out there. We know we've got some solid prepellant in the air. We're basically letting the fires burn out, but they are contained."
Officials say the Space Station has enough supplies on board to last until early next year.
Giant haul of illegal drugs go up in flames in Afghanistan
A giant haul of illegal drugs is prepared for destruction in Afghanistan. The confiscated drugs include raw opium, hashish and chemicals used to process opium into heroin.
(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) DEPUTY MINISTER OF AFGHAN INTERIOR FOR COUNTERNARCOTICS, GENERAL BAZ MOHAMMAD AHMADI, SAYING: "The amount of drugs destroyed in today's ceremony was over 20 tons. These drugs were seized by Afghan counternarcotics police and other Afghan security departments from areas around Kabul."
Afghanistan has long been the world's leading supplier of opium---with opium poppy cultivation hitting an all-time high in 2013, according to a recent UN report. The U.N. drug office pegged the value of poppy cultivation and opium products produced here in 2013 at about $3 billion - that's a 50 percent increase over the estimated $2 billion in 2012. This----despite years of counter-narcotics efforts that, the UN report says, have cost the United States a whopping $7.6 billion since the start of the war in 2001 - prompting questions about whether the long and costly campaign against poppy cultivation has gone up in smoke.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DONETSK PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC LEADER, ALEXANDER ZAKHARCHENKO, SAYING: "I want our pensioners to be able to travel to Australia at least once a year and to shoot fifteen or so kangaroos on safari. I want my compatriots to work to live, and not live to work. That's what I want. I want the average salary to be higher than in Poland. That's what I want. I want to live in a big, rich, free country."
Ukrainain President Petro Poroshenko isn't buying it.
(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT, PETRO POROSHENKO, SAYING: "A just society can be built only where there is the rule of law, when there are fair elections, unlike elections - pseudo-elections - that terrorists and bandits are planning to hold on occupied territories. On November 2nd, under the barrels of guns, they want to demonstrate a fake expression of will."
The dispute over the rebel vote has deepened the discord between Russia and the West over the future of Ukraine, going back to the overthrow by protesters of the country's Moscow-backed president in February. The November 2nd vote will be held in defiance of Ukrainian elections held last Sunday in which pro-Western parties triumphed.
