Australian police in security raids
澳大利亞警方發動安全突擊行動
Australian police raid homes in Melbourne in a crackdown on suspected radical Islamists feared to be plotting attacks in the country. At least one man's been arrested. But investigators said the raids in five Melbourne suburbs on Tuesday weren't linked to any threat to public safety.

The search warrants were the culmination of an eight-month investigation named Operation Hohensalzburg which began by information provided by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation."

The Melbourne raids followed similar operations in Sydney and Brisbane which authorities said had thwarted a plot to behead a random member of the public. Authorities are worried about the number of Australian nationals believed to be fighting with militant groups overseas who could pose a security risk. Prominent Australian Muslims say their communities are being unfairly targeted by law enforcement agencies and right-wing groups.

Illustrating the problems facing the new president, a suicide bomber killed seven people near Kabul airport just before the inauguration. The Taliban claimed responsibility. With the withdrawal of most foreign troops this year and reports of tensions within the coalition, Ghani is faced with a crucial test. On the streets of Kabul, hopes are high.

Caught near the summit of Mt Ontake. For one group of hikers there was no choice but to seek shelter in a nearby mountain lodge, while the volcanic rock and debris rained down. When it was over, the group ventured outside, the mountain blanketed by ash. A difficult descent lay ahead. But they were among the lucky ones. Hundreds of climbers were believed to be on Mt Ontake when it erupted. More than 30 are feared dead. The search for survivors continues.
