First referendum results declared in Scottish referendum
A hat trick for unionists in Scotland. Clackmannanshire was the earliest Scottish local authority to declare, "No" --rejecting leaving the UK.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHIEF COUNTING OFFICER, MARIE PITCAITHLY, GIVING RESULTS FOR CLACKMANNANSHIRE SAYING: "The local authority in question is Clackmannanshire. The number of ballot papers counted 35,410. The turnout was 88.6 percent. The number of 'Yes' votes: 16,350. The number of 'No' votes: 19,036 and there were 24 rejected papers. Thank you very much.
Voters in the Western Isles, and Orkney also voted against independence. There were cheers and groans as Scots agonised over the results. Many in the "No" camp had feared the "Yes" vote would be stronger in Clackmannanshire.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) DANNY ALEXANDER SCOTTISH MP (LIBERAL DEMOCRAT), CHIEF SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY, SAYING: "Well absolutely delighted that Clackmannanshire has voted 'No'. It is one of those areas, I think, many psephologist (election analysts) regarded as a bellwether for this referendum and the fact that we have won it with a decent majority is, I think, encouraging for the rest of the night. And it seems to me that we are going to have a 'No' majority in this referendum, though obviously there is a long way to go. Of course, that's great news for Scotland and for the United Kingdom, but also just a start to the serious task to make sure that Scotland gets the additional power that it needs, to make sure that Scotland continues to be a strong and effective part of the United Kingdom."
A YouGov on-the-day survey published shortly after polls closed also suggested the result would end in a "No" by 54% to a 46% "Yes", meaning the 307 year old union between Scotland and the rest of the UK would continue. But this is just the start. These first three results are the smallest council areas in Scotland and there are 29 to go.
Hurricane aftermath in Mexico
Scenes of the aftermath of Hurricane Odile in Mexico's luxury resort town of Los Cabos. A local Walmart was not only battered by the storm -- but has been just about stripped bare by looters.

But authorities are doing what they can. Food is being prepared for the hungry. And water will be provided for those still coping with one of the worst storms to ever hit Los Cabos.
