EU to impose new sanctions on Russia
They're training 10 to 15 hours every day, with the possibility of joining Ukrainian government troops' fight against pro-Russian rebels. This trainer says they're preparing for war... Learning guerilla tactics to survive in military conditions, and ultimately, preparing to destroy their enemy. The EU is employing different tactics, in hopes Russia will help end the crisis in eastern Ukraine. A spokeswoman for the EU foreign policy chief says new economic sanctions on Russia would take effect Friday.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SPOKESWOMAN FOR EU FOREIGN POLICY CHIEF CATHERINE ASHTON, MAJA KOCIJANCIC, SAYING: "In response, the European Union is deepening the measures in four areas where we already have measures in place since July. We are talking about access to capital markets, defence, sensitive technologies, and dual-use goods."
The Russian Foreign Ministry is calling the new sanctions an "unfriendly policy."
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN, ALEXANDER LUKASHEVICH, SAYING: "The Russian political leadership has already made it clear to politicians of various levels that we will take adequate measures and our response will be proportional to the damage which these sanctions cause to the economies of our state."
But EU ambassadors say they may cancel some or all of the sanctions next month if they believe a peace plan is working. A strategy much different from what these fighters are preparing for.
September 11 anniversary marked as Islamic State threat looms
For some, the sounds of sirens alone are enough to evoke the memories. And the sight of smoke can choke the heart. Thirteen years after al Qaeda attacked the United States, the pain remains. In what has become an annual ritual, politicians, dignitaries and victims' relatives gathered in New York, at the Pentagon and in rural Pennsylvania. From Gordon Aamoth Jr. to Igor Zukelman, victims' names were read in lower Manhattan where the World Trade Center's twin towers once stood. During a private ceremony at the Pentagon, President Barack Obama said no attack could stop America.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "Thirteen years after small, hateful minds conspired to break up,America stands tall and America stands proud. And guided by values that sustain us, we will only grow stronger."
The anniversary comes as the U.S. faces what Obama calls an increasing danger. He announced Wednesday night an aerial bombing campaign against Islamic State -- an offshoot of al Qaeda that has seized large parts of Iraq and Syria.
South African judge clears Pistorius of premeditated murder
A South African judge has cleared bladerunner Oscar Pistorius of all murder charges.
SOUNDBITE: Judge Thokozile Masipa saying: "The state has clearly not proved, beyond reasonable doubt, that the accused is guilty of pre-meditated murder. There are just not enough facts to support such a finding."
An emotional Pistorius wiped away tears as the verdict was read. Prosecutors argued that Pistorius killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after a heated argument on Valentine's Day. Pistorius said the shooting was a horrible accident and that he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder. Judge Thokozile Masipa said the state had not proven their case beyond a shadow of a doubt. She was critical of Pistorius, describing him as an evasive witness.
SOUNDBITE: Judge Thokozile Masipa saying: "The accused was clearly not candid with the court when he said he had no intention to shoot at anyone as he had a loaded firearm in his hand ready to shoot."
While he's been cleared of murder charges, which carry a 25-year prison sentence, Pistorius could still be convicted of culpable homicide. That charge carries the possibility of a 15-year sentence.
