Jack and Beryl Pengelly don't usually go to the market by boat... But as flooding, heavy winds and rain continue to inundate parts of southern England it's becoming more and more the norm. Some parts of the country have been underwater for more than a month after the wettest January on record leaving homeowners displaced and crops ruined. Friday, gale force winds tormented coastal areas including Hampshire where 32 diners enjoying a Valentine's Day meal had to be evacuated. Prime Minister David Cameron toured a flood relief center in Surrey over the weekend as soldiers prepared some of the flood relief efforts. Cameron said the clock is ticking to get resources in place.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UK PRIME MINISTER, DAVID CAMERON, SAYING: "...this is a vast national effort where we're bringing all the resources of our country together and what we do in the next 24 hours is vital as tragically the river levels will rise again and so every sandbag delivered, every house helped, every flood barrier put in place can make a big difference."
British weather officials have forecasted improved conditions in the coming days, although even a little rainfall could mean more flooding as the ground is beyond the saturation point. And still residents do their best to remain optimistic.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) FLOOD VICTIMS, JACK AND BERYL PENGELLY, SAYING: This is just a interlude in our life basically. Something to look back on and remember, but there's a lot of people who are far worse off then us." BERYL: "Far worse." An interlude that's expected to continue for months.
