Olympic torch blasts off
奧運火炬歷史首進太空 將進行太空漫步
It may look like any other Russian rocket launch but this one has a crucial difference. On board the Soyuz rocket carrying three astronauts there is also the Olympic torch. The torch, unlit for safety reasons, blasted off from the Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan on Thursday. Two Russian cosmonauts are planning to take it for a space walk on Saturday. The Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi is due to host the 2014 Games. It'll be the first time an Olympic torch will have been carried in open space, although they've been taken on space voyages before aboard the U.S. space shuttle. The torch is due to come back down to Earth on Monday to continue its 65, 000 kilometre relay.

British royals begin India visit

Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, began their third official visit to India on Wednesday. Their first stop was a Hindu prayer ceremony on the banks of the Ganges in the holy town of Rishikesh. The town was badly hit by heavy rains and floods earlier this year, disrupting the lives of two million people.

On Thursday the royal couple began the day meeting cadets at the Indian Military Academy in the town of Dehradun. They're also due to visit New Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Kochi during the visit which also includes celebrations for Prince Charles' 65th birthday on November 14th.

Deadly blast at Syria military HQ

At least eight Syrian security personnel died in this car bomb attack on a military intelligence headquarters in the south. The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said an army major was among those killed. It said dozens more were wounded in the blast in Suweida which has been largely spared the violence of civil war. Syria's SANA state news agency said 41 people were wounded but made no mention of the target. It attributed the bomb to terrorists, a term it often uses to describe the rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad. Earlier the same day an improvised bomb in Damascus claimed eight lives and wounded at least 50.
