Humanitarian crisis after Typhoon devastates central Philippines
An airport resembles a war zone in the Philippines after one of the strongest typhoons ever to make landfall strikes the country. In its wake -- damage, debris and death.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PHILIPPINES INTERIOR SECRETARY, MAR ROXAS, SAYING: "The devastation is.......I don't have the words for it. It's really horrific, it's a great human tragedy. There's no power, there's no light. By the time the sun sets, it's dark, and you're just going to have to make your way to where you can find some shelter."
That's interior minister Mar Roxas who says it's too early for any official death toll, with at least 1,200 already presumed dead.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PHILIPPINES INTERIOR SECRETARY, MAR ROXAS, SAYING: "There's no.....we have not begun to count, we have not begun to count because there's no information. Even between here and Tacloban, there's no radio, there's no cell site."
The wounded stand in line awaiting help. Authorities expect the death toll to go even higher. The category 5 "super typhoon" weakened to a category 4 on Saturday. But forecasters say it could strengthen again over the South China Sea as it heads toward Vietnam.
International aid heading for the Philippines
Shipments of international aid are en-route to the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc in the central part of the country. Planes carrying supplies for the more than 4 million people affected by the disaster left Frankfurt on Sunday. The storm, possibly the biggest ever to make landfall, flattened entire coastal regions leaving thousands feared dead. Local officials estimate at least 10,000 people have died the city of Tacloban alone. Philippine President Benigno Aquino spoke to reporters at the airport there on Sunday and said the first priority was helping survivors.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT BENIGNO AQUINO SAYING: "Tally for the missing and also that have been confirmed dead, that's a concern. But we are addressing first the needs of those who are still living, especially those that are injured, the need for food and need for water."
Some food and water was being handed out to residents at Tacloban airport, but more supplies are urgently needed. Officials said looting and lawlessness are preventing more aid from reaching the affected region. Typhoon Haiyan is headed for Vietnam where authorities have relocated more than 800,000 people. The storm is expected to hit central parts of the country overnight.
