Kerry sees progress on Israeli-Palestinian framework deal
On his 10th visit to the Mideast in a year, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says he sees progress on a "framework agreement" to guide talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Kerry is trying to establish what U.S. officials call a "framework" of general guidelines for an accord, with details to be filled in later. Kerry met with the Palestinian president for about 3 hours of talks. Afterwards, Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat said Kerry is pressing for a two-state solution:

The U.S. hopes the talks will lead to an agreement within nine months.

Clashes erupt in Syria after shots fired at crowd
Syrian rebel factions clash with fighters from the al Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in a town in Idlib province. The clashes came after shots were fired into a crowd commemorating the death of a prominent rebel leader held by the powerful al Qaeda-linked group. The video, which can not be independently verified by Reuters, shows people running for their life as gunfire rings through the street. Several demonstrations were held in Idlib and Aleppo provinces to mark the death of a prominent Syrian doctor and rebel commander, Hussein Suleiman. Suleiman's body was handed over earlier this week as part of a prisoner swap between the rival rebel forces. Video of his corpse showed signs of beating and one ear was cut off. More footage from Friday appears to show a gas pipeline in flames. Syria's State news agency says the attack on the pipeline caused a massive fire which led to electrical outages across southern Syria. Efforts to end the almost three-year-old conflict hit another snag Saturday -- an influential Western-backed opposition group shunned talks aimed at ending the war.
