Argentines protest power outages as country faces worst heatwave in decades

The streets of Argentina are burning. The worst heatwave in at least four decades has caused major power outages and water shortages. Now residents in Buenos Aires are protesting the conditions.

Temperatures in the capital have soared to 44 degrees Celsius, or 111 degrees Fahrenheit. Emergency workers are delivering much-needed water to residents. One ice cream shop had to close its doors to the public after the outages spoiled the goods.

The temperatures have caused the deaths of three people in the country's north. Officials say the heat wave is expected to continue through at least Tuesday.

Collision with train carrying crude oil causes massive explosion

A train collision in North Dakota causes a major fire and series of explosions, sending a mushroom cloud deep into the sky. The collision happened in the eastern part of the state, just a mile outside of the small town of Casselton. Officials said it was just after 2 p.m. local time when a westbound train carrying soybeans derailed and an eastbound 104-car train hauling crude oil ran into it. Aerial video shows the smoke drifting across the horizon. Oil can be seen from above burning in the snow. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Aurora Australis is one of two ships trying to reach a Russian vessel stranded for a week in the Antarctic sea-ice. A blizzard has forced it to turn back to open waters when it was about 18 kilometres from the trapped ship. A Chinese ship's also tried and failed to get to it but Australian maritime safety officials co-ordinating the rescue say there are still options.

The MV Akademik Shokalskiy left New Zealand on a privately funded trip with 74 passengers and 22 crew on board. The expedition commemorates the 100th anniversary of a journey led by Australian explorer Douglas Mawson. Russia's Australian embassy says everyone on board is in good health and there's no threat to their lives or safety. The would-be rescuers now have to wait for the weather to improve before any second attempt to reach them.
