Two UK women sentenced to 7 years for drug trafficking in Peru

Michaella McCollum from Northern Ireland and Melissa Reid from Scotland -- known in the media as the Peru two -- arrive in court for sentencing. The two twenty-year-olds were arrested at an airport here in Peru in August after 11 kilos of cocaine was found hidden in their luggage. Both women admitted trying to smuggle the cocaine worth around 2.3 million dollars.Lawyers said they had been jailed for nearly seven years each, but the sentences were reduced because of their guilty pleas.

The women told the Peruvian authorities they were working in the party island of Ibiza and did not meet before they were both kidnapped at gunpoint. They said they were then sent to Peru and forced to carry the drugs.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators take to the streets of Kiev - after Ukraine strikes a deal with Moscow. Earlier on Tuesday - Russia agreed to give Ukraine a 15 billion dollar bailout - and significant cuts to the price of gas. The deal - with Ukrainian President Vicktor Yanukovich - was a coup for Russian President Vladimir Putin - and quickly sparked more anti-government protests in Kiev's Independence Square. Heavy weight champion - and head of the opposition party - Udar - Vitaly Klitschko.

Mass demonstrations in the former Soviet republic - started last month after Yanukovich walked away from a trade deal with Europe. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the deal won't address the oppositions' concerns.

Snowden offers to help Brazil on U.S. spying

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, is making headlines in Brazil. In a letter addressed to the "Brazilian People," published in a leading Brazilian newspaper, he offered a helping hand in an investigation into U.S. spying there. The NSA has reportedly monitored the communications of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. White House Spokesman Jay Carney had this to say on the latest Snowden affair:

Snowden's letter was also published in English on the Facebook page of David Miranda. He's the partner of journalist Glenn Greenwald, the man who first broke the news of Snowden's U.S. spying revelations to the world. Snowden is currently living in Russia under temporary asylum. Brazil says it is not considering granting asylum to Snowden.
