Putin to pardon oil tycoon
普京特赦俄羅斯原能源巨頭
Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to pardon former political opponent and oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Putin made the surprise announcement during a news conference Thursday saying Khodorkovsky had asked for a pardon in a written letter because his mother was ill. Khodorkovsky was jailed in 2003 on tax evasion and fraud charges. His imprisonment became a symbol for what critics say is the Kremlin's abuse of the courts for political ends. Political analyst say the move was Putin's attempt to silence his critics in the West- and just in time too as Russia is set to host the Winter Olympics in 2014.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) POLITICAL ANALYST MARIA LIPMAN, SAYING: "At a time when he is referred to as bad, as an evil leader, as a leader of Russia which is launching a campaign of expansion, a leader who is near imperialistic, he suddenly attracts the whole world to himself as a merciful leader who can pardon." Putin also said two members of the punk rock group Pussy Riot would also be freed on amnesty.

Theatre collapse victims treated at area hospitals
倫敦阿波羅劇院樓頂坍塌 近90人受傷
Nearly 90 people injured when the ceiling of a theatre in London caved in during a performance Thursday night are being treated at area hospitals. Medical staff were on hand at St. Thomas' Hospital to receive the wounded... most of whom suffered head injuries. It happened at the Apollo Theatre in London's West End entertainment district during a packed performance of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time." Officials said a 10 meter square section of ornate plaster ceiling fell onto the audience during the show. Police say it's too early to tell what caused the ceiling to fall.

Santa Claus is getting ready for annual trip
圣誕老人開始一年一度的旅行
Christmas Eve is approaching fast and here in the Arctic Circle one jolly old man and his helpers are busy preparing for their biggest night of the year. This is Santa Claus village. Inside the main post office, around half a million letters are being sorted according to country and read in their original language. They all end up with Santa who says this year he has a wish of his own.
平安夜的腳步越來越近，在北極圈，一位興高采烈的老人和他的助手正忙著為一年中最盛大的晚上做準備。這里是圣誕老人村。在主要的郵局，大約50萬封信件正在按照國籍和母語分類。而圣誕老人本人表示，今年他也有自己的愿望。

Throughout the year Santa Claus resides in this village located in Rovaniemi in Finland, where over 300,000 people visited him last year. But in about a week he will visit children everywhere when he makes his famous round-the-world journey.
