Fire destroys Bangladesh garment factory

A huge blaze destroys a garment factory outside the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka. There were no reports of casualties, but the fire gutted a ten-storey building at Gazipur and spread to adjacent buildings. Around 18,000 people worked in the factory, but most had left before the fire erupted late Thursday night. Local officials say the blaze was started by angry workers, who blamed police for the death of a colleague. Garments are a vital sector for Bangladesh. The country's low wages have helped it become the world's second-largest apparel exporter after China. But this factory fire is the latest in a string of accidents in Bangladesh. And with global concern over poor safety standards, the government and manufacturers are under pressure to reform Bangladesh's 22-billion-dollar garment industry.

Another day of protests in Thailand. The target this time: the army headquarters in Bangkok. Around 1,000 anti-government protesters forced their way into the compound in an effort to shut it down and paralyse the government. Army staff watched, as protesters broke open the gate and drove their truck in. The demonstrators urged the army to come and join them, forcing Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign.

The protesters say Yingluck's government is controlled by her brother -- the ousted former leader Thaksin Shinawatra who they claim is corrupt. They accuse her of using her party's majority to push for laws that many say would have allowed the return of Thaksin, without having to serve jail. And they're determined to keep the pressure on throughout the weekend.

Protests turn violent at Cairo University with at least one student killed as clashes broke out between supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi and security forces. The students were protesting against harsh new restrictions on the right to protest -- a move recently adopted by the military-backed interim government that ousted Mursi. Scores were injured in the uproar. Similar scenes in Alexandria as students protested over severe sentences handed down to female protesters. An Alexandria court jailed 14 women for 11 years for obstructing traffic during a protest by supporters of Mursi that took place late last month. Mursi was ousted by the military in July, following mass protests against him. Since then a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood has killed more than 1,000 protesters and led to the imprisonment of thousands.
