France shooting suspect held
French police have arrested the man they believe was the shooter in this terrifying security camera video. The suspect's been named as Abdelhakim Dekhar. Some sources say he was found in his car parked in a Paris suburb. A second source said he was thought to be on medication and not in a state to be questioned. A photographer's assistant was seriously wounded in the shooting at the offices of the left-wing Liberation newspaper on Monday. Shortly afterwards shots were fired into the lobby at the headquarters of a major bank although no-one was wounded in that attack. The gunman escaped after hijacking a car atgunpoint. The French interior minister said later Dekhar had links to a couple involved in a deadly shootout with police in Paris in 1994. Three police officers and a taxi driver were killed in what became known as the Rey-Maupin affair. The killers used a gun bought by Dekhar who was given a four-year jail term because of it.
Birth of an island
A new island emerges from the waves to join Japan's southern Ogasawara chain. The island was created by an erupting undersea volcano filmed by the Japanese coast guard. It's just 200 metres in diameter but the powerful eruption sent plumes of smoke almost 600 metres into the air. Japan's government spokesman welcomed the arrival of the new territory but said it was too early to consider naming it.
(SOUNDBITE)(Japanese) JAPANESE CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY YOSHIHIDE SUGA SAYING: "In the past there have been such instances but those islands caused by an undersea volcano then sank again so we'll be watching to see what happens."
If the new arrival survives it'll join Japan's estimated 6,000 islands. It would technically be part of Tokyo even though it's more than 1,000 kilometres away.
Western powers, Iran meet in Geneva for fresh round of talks
Like clockwork, representatives for the European Union, the United States, Russia, China and Iran meet in Geneva for another round of talks. Once again, the subject of those talks... negotiating a deal to curb Iran's nuclear program. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif met Wednesday afternoon. And Ashton's spokesman, Michael Mann, told journalists that their positive meeting showed a commitment to reaching a deal.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SPOKESMAN FOR EU FOREIGN POLICY CHIEF CATHERINE ASHTON, MICHAEL MANN, SAYING: "High Representative Ashton has come here determined to make further progress to drive the process forward. The fact that these talks are so soon after the last round is, I think, a sign of the seriousness of the negotiations."
Diplomats close to the negotiations say Western powers are close to winning concessions from Iran in exchange for some sanctions relief. Still, Mann admits the talks could drag on.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SPOKESMAN FOR EU FOREIGN POLICY CHIEF CATHERINE ASHTON, MICHAEL MANN, SAYING: "There has never been a deadline. We have made a great deal of progress in the last two rounds and we hope to continue that progress in this round. I mean, I can say it again, we just want to reach an agreement as quickly as we can but it has to be the right agreement, therefore it will take as long as it takes. But we're not here to talk for the sake of talking."
The talks will continue until Friday.
