Dozens trapped in South Africa shopping mall collapse
南非在建商場坍塌 數十人被困
Rescue teams worked late into the night combing through broken concrete slabs and twisted bits of metal. At least one person was killed and up to 50 people were trapped when a section of a shopping mall under construction near the South African city of Durban caved in. More than two dozen others, some in critical condition, were rushed to a nearby hospital. Tuesday night, large crowds watched anxiously as sniffer dogs looked for survivors in debris. One official said local authorities had tried to stop construction of the three-story structure a month ago. Durban's Deputy Mayor spoke to reporters.

(SOUNDBITE) (Zulu) Durban Deputy Mayor, Nomvuzo Shabalala saying: "What we know as the City Council of Durban is that there were rules and regulations that were never followed in connection with this building. We were under the impression the construction of this building had stopped during the past month. We were also shocked today when we got the report that the structure had collapsed and there were people working inside." It's unclear what caused the accident.

Philippines fishermen warm to fridge boats
菲律賓漁民災后努力恢復生計
This small fishing community in the Philippines looks like a wasteland in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. But the destruction's given rise to ingenuity as the fishermen try to revive their shattered livelihoods. Fridges damaged in the storm are getting a new role as boats to replace the real thing smashed to pieces. Jimmy Obaldo was the first to take to the waters aboard a floating fridge.
臺風海燕襲擊過后，菲律賓這個小漁村看上去一片荒蕪。但是臺風帶來的破壞激發了人們的創意，這些漁民努力試圖恢復生計。在暴風雨中被損壞的冰箱發揮了新的作用，代替了被臺風撕成碎片的真正的船。Jimmy Obaldo是第一個駕駛漂浮的冰箱出海的人。
(SOUNDBITE)(Waray) LOCAL FISHERMAN JIMMY OBALDO SAYING: "We got the idea to use refrigerators as boats from my children. They just asked me if we could use it as a boat and then we tried it and tested it."

There are drawbacks. Steering isn't easy, the sea has to be calm, the fridge fishermen have to paddle faster and use smaller,lighter nets. The fishermen are able to catch enough seafood to feed their own families but not to feed the whole town. But fishing from a fridge may be the only option for some time to come. It takes up to two months to build a new fishing boat.

The Sardinian town of Olbia is among the areas worst-hit by Cyclone Cleopatra. As night fell on Tuesday emergency workers were starting the task of clearing up.

At least 18 people are now known to have died when the storm hit the Italian island late on Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Severe flooding has left hundreds homeless. The Italian government's putting up 27 million dollars of immediate emergency funds. Sardinia's regional government's approved another 6.7 million. The bad weather was forecast to clear up on Wednesday.
