Officials focus on damage assessment after deadly Midwest tornadoes

It's going to be a long road to recovery in the Midwest where entire towns were shredded to pieces in Sunday's wave of deadly tornadoes. Illinois was the hardest hit state. The governor there vowing to help communities get back on their feet.

Those assessments are necessary for state officials to apply for federal assistance. Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts continue as clean up crews face the daunting task of clearing widespread debris.

The Red Cross has set up shelters and is helping the hundreds who have lost their homes.

Gunman on loose in Paris after newspaper, bank shootings

French police in Paris were on alert Monday after a double shooting they say was carried out by the same gunman. Police say an unknown assailant fired several rounds from a hunting gun inside the offices of the left-wing French newspaper,Liberation. The paper's deputy director said the gunman seriously injured a photographer's assistant before fleeing.

Some 90 minutes later, the same man opened fire on the street outside the suburban headquarters of a major bank, Societe Generale. Police say no one was injured in the second incident and there's no clear motive yet for either shooting.

The shootings come just days after an intruder entered the offices of a TV channel, threatening journalists before disappearing. Police say video surveillance footage shows it was the same man. A man hunt was under way and police were deployed outside the offices of media outlets across the French capital.

Russia mourns victims of deadly plane crash

Flags fly at half staff at the Kazan airport in Russia Monday after 50 people died in a plane crash. A Boeing 737 enroute from Moscow crashed Sunday as it attempted to land. The son of the president of the province was among those who died. The plane had been trying to abort its landing in order to make a second approach when it crashed, killing all 44 passengers and six crew members. Officials say there had been no technical problems reported with the plane prior to the flight and regular maintenance and troubleshooting had been conducted.
