Toronto Mayor Rob Ford stripped of some powers

He's admitted to smoking crack cocaine. And he's been making international headlines with his - quote - "drunken stupors,"obscene outbursts and combative exchanges with reporters. Now, Toronto City Council has voted to strip Mayor Rob Ford of some powers, in a system that has very few legal means to remove him from office.

If I had a mayor acting the way I conducted myself I would have done the exact same thing."

Council voted 39 to 3 to suspend the mayor's ability to appoint and dismiss the deputy mayor and the heads of council committees. Council also voted 41 to 2 to give the deputy mayor, rather than the mayor, special powers during emergencies such as natural disasters. Only Rob Ford and his brother, Doug, voted no. Councillors are expected on Monday to consider slashing his budget. The mayor says he plans to challenge Friday's moves in court. He says he was elected to do a job. And he won't step down. In fact, he has vowed to run for mayor again in next October's election.

EU pledges more money as UN says situation improving

More aid is pledged to the Philippines after one of the world's most powerful typhoons. The head of the European Community Humanitarian Office Kristaline Georgieva has promised that aid from the EU will exceed 25 million U.S. dollars.

The United Nations says that international aid is finally reaching the worst hit areas in the central Philippines after a super typhoon ripped through the country. But the UN says still more needs to be done with nearly two million homeless and thousands dead.

Abdulla Yameen elected President of Maldives

The Maldives elects Abdulla Yameen as president. He narrowly defeated the favorite, Mohamed Nasheed -- the Maldives' first democratically elected president in 2008, who was forced to resign early last year in what he said was a coup. During a bitter campaign, Yameen and his backers accused Nasheed and his Party of being too secular and close to the West. After the ballot, Yameen addressed hundreds of supporters.
