Obama to name Yellen as next Fed chair on Wednesday
U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to nominate Janet Yellen Wednesday to become the next head of the Federal Reserve and the first woman to lead the institution in its 100-year history. The 67-year old Vice Chairman of the Fed has been a forceful advocate of aggressive action to drive down unemployment. Her main challenge ahead will be winding down the extraordinary policy measures the Fed has taken in the last five years to stem the financial crisis. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, she would replace Ben Bernanke, whose second four-year term expires Jan. 31.
Anti-army protests staged at Egyptian universities
Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters take to the streets of Egypt to protest against the army after deadly clashes over the weekend. Here students gather outside Zagazig University in Sharqia in defiance, chanting "Down with the military". The same scenes were repeated at Cairo's university campus. Supporters of deposed President Mohamed Mursi urged them to gather after 57 people died and hundreds were wounded on Sunday.
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED PRO-MURSI STUDENT OF ZAGAZIG UNIVERSITY, SAYING: "We are here to say no to oppression.Where is our president? Why are our colleagues and brothers dying? Where has legitimacy gone? Where is the constitution and democracy that they (anti-Mursi) are calling for? We keep dying and nobody cares. We are being humiliated and nobody cares. In the end, we will die and we know that nobody will help us. But, nevertheless, we will continue objecting to what is going on, we will object until we die, we will see our demands met or we'll die, we will stand our ground."
But on Tuesday there was no security forces at Zagazig University, where Mursi had once taught. Instead students clashed with local residents who opposed the Muslim Brotherhood. Political tensions have gripped Egypt since the army ousted Mursi in July, installing an interim government. The authorities have promised fair elections soon, while cracking down hard on the Brotherhood Islamist organisation.
Fire kills nine at Bangladesh garment factory
The fire broke out late Tuesday in the knitting section of this garment factory in Gazipur, near the Bangladesh capital. At least nine employees of Aswad Composite Mills factory died in the blaze and scores more were injured.
(SOUNDBITE) (Nur Nabi) UNNAMED FACTORY WORKER, SAYING: "In the evening when fire broke out I came here to search for my uncle who was working in this factory, I have not yet found him. I found out that the fire started from a stander machine, the silencer of the machine exploded, the fire spread and the factory caught fire. Immediately after the fire many people ran out of the factory but a few could not get out."
As firefighters continue to douse the flames of the smouldering rubble questions remain about the cause of the fire. Grieving friends and relatives form a line to view the bodies. This is just one of many disasters in Bangladeshi factories. There's been a series of deadly fires and a building collapse in April that killed more than 1100 people. The issue has raised global concern over safety standards in Bangladesh's garment industry, where low wages has helped to make the country the world's second largest apparel exporter after China.
