Libyan PM briefly held by gunmen angry at U.S. al Qaeda capture

The chaotic end to a short but tense episode in post-revolutionary Libya. Prime Minister Ali Zeidan returned to his office on Thursday after he was seized and held for several hours by former rebel fighters. Back with his cabinet, Zeidan called for calm following his release.

Details around Zeidan's kidnapping and release are not entirely clear. Earlier, a militia called the Operations Room of Libya's Revolutionaries told Reuters it "arrested" Zeidan because it was angry over Libya's apparent involvement in the capture of a Libyan al Qaeda suspect in Tripoli by U.S. special forces over the weekend. But the group later denied any involvement in his kidnapping.

Zeidan was freed unharmed but his brief detention underlines Libya's post-Gaddafi turmoil. Its central government remains vulnerable, struggling to contain rival militias and Islamists who control large parts of the country.

After months of waiting, the father of N.S.A. leaker Edward Snowden is finally in Russia. Lon Snowden entered the country through the same airport where his son was stranded for weeks this summer. Outside the airport, he told the media that he has had no direct contact with his son.

Back home in the Swat Valley where she survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban last year, Ahmed Shah, spokesman for the Swat National Peace Council, says she deserves every bit of recognition.

Malala's growing profile has continued to attract the Taliban's attention and more death threats. The activist says she's not afraid and will continue her mission, an attitude that has earned her a Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
