Baghdad bombs kill dozens
巴格達爆炸造成數(shù)十人死亡
At least 54 people lost their lives as a series of car bombs detonated in mainly Shi'ite Muslim districts of the Iraqi capital. Dozens more have been wounded. The deadliest single attack was here in Sadr City where a car packed with explosives blew up near a group of labourers. Seven people were killed in that blast alone.

In total 14 car bombs exploded across Baghdad. It wasn't immediately clear who was behind the attacks. But hardline Sunni Muslim militants who see Shi'ites as non-believers have been intensifying their insurgency this year. The monitoring group Iraq Body Count says more than 6,000 people have died in violence so far this year. Iraq's delicate sectarian balance has been upset further by the civil war in Syria where mainly Sunni rebels are trying to overthrow a leader backed by Shi'ite Iran. Both Sunnis and Shi'ites have gone to Syria from Iraq to fight on opposite sides of the conflict.

Nigeria college students gunned down

Victims of an attack by suspected Islamist militant gunmen on a Nigerian college arrive at hospital. About 40 students were killed in the attack, some of them shot as they slept. Witnesses said the gunmen marched some students outside and shot them. Others were gunned down as they tried to flee the scene at Damaturu in the north-east. The state governor who visited the victims of Sunday's attack urged security forces to do more to stop the insurgency.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) GOVERNOR OF YOBE STATE, ALHAJI IBRAHIM GAIDAM, SAYING: "We have seen movements of troops and armour fighting, we are yet to see the action on ground actually, so I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to the military authority and all other securities, the police and all civil defence to ensure that, to live up to the expectation of our people, because we have been seeing many English written on the pages of the newspapers but no action. We want action. The gunmen are thought to be members of the rebel Boko Haram group which wants to establish an Islamist state in northern Nigeria. It's stepped up attacks recently in response to a military offensive against its insurgency.

Greece's Golden Dawn crackdown

Greek lawmaker Christos Pappas was the latest supporter of the far-right Golden Dawn party to face charges of belonging to a criminal organisation. He was arrested on Sunday after handing himself in. He appeared the same day before a prosecutor and an investigating magistrate. The party's leader will appear in court on Tuesday to enter his pleas on the same charges. A party spokesman, four other lawmakers and 13 party members are due to enter pleas on Wednesday. It's the biggest mass detention of legislators since the end of Greece's military dictatorship almost 40 years ago. The party was investigated after the fatal stabbing of an anti-fascist rapper earlier in September. Investigators were looking for evidence linking it to that and a series of other criminal offences. The party denies any connection to the killing. The inquiry has also led to a shake-up among Greek police after the discovery of Golden Dawn cells operating within the force.
