Russia, Syria denounce U.N. report as fighting rages on
Syria and Russia are on the attack, criticizing the new U.N. report on chemical weapons usage in Syria as preconceived and tainted by politics. In Damascus, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hosted both a Russian and American delegation to discuss both the report and the recent plan to eliminate his country's stockpiles. The report confirmed the nerve agent sarin was used in the August 21 attack but did not assign blame. Britain, France and the United States say it confirmed Syria's government was behind it and not the rebels as Russia suggests. Meanwhile, fighting continues to plague the country. Video obtained by Reuters shows rebel fighters and government forces clashing in the town of Areeha in the Idlib province. One Free Syrian Army rebel claims they are gaining ground.
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) FREE SYRIAN ARMY REBEL, ABU JIHAD, SAYING: "We destroyed this building where Assad's forces were stationed. We targeted the building with mortar shells, missiles, and tanks." So far the two-and-a-half-year conflict has killed more than 100,000 people and displaced millions.
