Islamists claim gun attack on Nairobi mall, at least 30 dead

The Somali militant group al Shabaab, linked to al Qaeda, says it is responsible for the deadly ambush at a shopping mall in neighboring Kenya. The attack in the capital Nairobi left at least 30 people dead, including children, and many others injured. The shooting continued hours after the initial assault on the Westgate mall, which is popular with ex-pats here. Security forces surrounded the mall and troops combed the building, hunting the attackers shop by shop. Kenya's interior minister Jospeh Ole Lenku.

Kenya's President says one gunman was captured and died from his wounds. The assault is the single biggest attack in Kenya since an al Qaeda cell bombed the U.S. embassy here in 1998, killing more than 200 people. Al Shabaab group is battling peacekeepers from Kenya and other African nations in Somalia, and has threatened to target the Nairobi shopping mall before.In perhaps an ominous tweet, the group said it was time to - quote -- "shift the battleground" to Kenya.

Two bombs went off at this Sunni mosque near the Iraqi city of Samarra during Friday prayers. The devices were hidden in an air conditioning unit. At least 15 people have been killed. At least 17 more have been wounded. It wasn't immediately clear who was behind the attack. But Iraq's delicate sectarian balance is under growing strain from the civil war in neighbouring Syria. Both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims have crossed into Syria from Iraq to join the conflict on both sides. Syria's rebels are mainly Sunnis fighting to oust a president backed by Shi'ite Iran.

The body of U.S aerobatic pilot David Riggs was found three days after his plane crashed into this lake in north-east China.His Lancier aircraft plunged into Caihu lake on Tuesday during a trial flight for an air show. A Chinese interpreter on board with him was rescued but died later in hospital. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said Riggs was an experienced Hollywood aerobatic pilot who'd set several world speed records.
