【詞義辨析】
allow, let, permit, leave, authorize
這些動詞均含“讓、允許”之意。
allow普通用詞，側重聽任、默許或不加阻止。在正式場合可用來表客氣的請求。
let常用詞，用于各種非正式場合，語氣最弱，指允許或無力阻止某事，暗示漠不關心或聽之任之。
permit正式用詞，在多數場合可與allow換用，語義最強，指準許某人做某事，含權威或正式的意味。
leave側重不加干涉。
authorize語氣最強，指權威性的允許與認可。

You can't work here without a work permit.

【詞義辨析】
answer, reply, respond, retort, return
這些動詞均有“回答”之意。
answer常用詞，指用書面、口頭或行動對他人的請求、詢問、質問等作出回答或反應。
reply較正式用詞，較少用于口語。側重經過考慮的較正式答復。
respond正式用詞，指即刻的，以口頭或行動對外來的號召、請求或刺激等作出回答或響應。
retort指對不同意見、批評或控訴作出迅速、有力的回答，即“反駁”。
return正式用詞，從本義“歸來，回去”引申作“回答、答辨”講時，含反駁或反唇相譏之意。
【例句用法】
Our investment accounts return a high rate of interest.

We look forward to the return of spring.
