Putin plans to leave G20 early amid tensions
There have been handshakes and a family photo... but the reception for Russian President Vladimir Putin has been less than amicable. According to a member of his delegation, Putin plans to leave the G20 summit early, after Western leaders blasted Moscow for the crisis in Ukraine and threatened more sanctions. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is quoted telling Putin, "I guess I'll shake your hand but I have only one thing to say to you: you need to get out of Ukraine." The conflict in the east has claimed more than 4,000 lives. And a fragile ceasefire is dangling by a thread. Yet Russia denies it's involved in a recent escalation of military activity in Ukraine. But it's certainly the topic of conversation... In a one-on-one meeting between Putin and British Prime Minister David Cameron, the conflict in Ukraine was the only matter discussed. A Russian official says the reason Putin plans to leave the summit early is because he needs to attend meetings in his own country.
Protests in Italy over job reforms
Protesters in Italy throw flares at police, angry over reforms their government is planning. Union members and students across the country don't want the change in job protection rules that could make it easier for companies to hire and fire people. They say it will undermine worker rights.
(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) PROTESTER, ROBERTO CAMPAELLA, SAYING: "This reform cannot be passed on until they really listen to the students and the workers of this country that are protesting today and will continue to do so. The answers given by the government so far have been insufficient and wrong. They are continuing to follow previous governments and go against this generation, who are paying the price for the crisis."
The government is struggling to jumpstart Italy's economy which is now back in recession. It says the proposal should encourage more foreign employers and stop it lagging behind the rest of Europe.
Thousands welcome return of Serb nationalist
Thousands in Belgrade welcome the return of nationalist leader Vojislav Seselj, on trial for committing war crimes during Yugoslavia's violent breakup. The UN tribunal released him temporarily on humanitarian grounds, because he has cancer that's spread from his colon to his liver. But he's said he's come home not just for treatment, but for revenge against his former allies, Serbia's president and prime minister.
(SOUNDBITE) (Serbian) LEADER OF SERBIAN RADICAL PARTY, VOJISLAV SESELJ, SAYING: "The worst politicians are now in power, and who are they? Our closest associates, our comrades, until recently. That's the wound which hurts the most, those who were in the first lines of battle for Serbs and Greater Serbia, now they are in favour of Americans and others from the West."
Seselj is accused of inciting people to commit murder, ethnic cleansing and other war crimes as part of the 'Greater Serbia' ideology. The resulting war in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo in the 90s killed more than 120,000 people.
