Brazilian fans dejected after World Cup semifinal loss

The joy of soccer came crashing down in Brazil on Tuesday. Excitement and anxiety for the World Cup semifinals gave way to disappointment and despair. After a 7-1 loss to Germany, Brazil is out, leaving nothing but tears for the fans. In Sao Paulo,Brazilian fans felt dejected.

Australian government hands navy boats to Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa takes delivery of two naval boats, a gift from Australia. The donation follows several high-profile cases in which boatloads of Sri Lankans have tried to claim asylum in the country.

The message to anyone who is thinking of getting in Australia illegally by boat is that the way is closed. Australia's handling of two boats of migrants from the country who were intercepted over the past week has drawn strong criticism by the United Nations and other human rights groups. These 41 asylum seekers were on one of them. They were returned to Sri Lanka where they were charged for leaving the country illegally. The government has said that any who are found guilty will face "rigourous imprisonment". Sri Lanka says many asylum seekers are in fact economic migrants. But rights groups say Tamils seek asylum to prevent torture, rape and other violence at the hands of the military.

South Sudan celebrates independence, urges end to war

Song rings out in South Sudan. They're celebrating the third anniversary of their independence. But behind the party, a young nation on the verge of famine. Their president, Salva Kiir, spoke during the festivities -- urging rebel leader Riek Machar to lay down his arms and resume peace talks.

Talks have stalled since a ceasefire was declared on May 9th, with both sides accusing each other of violating previous peace deals. More than 10,000 people have been killed since clashes broke out in Juba on December 15.
