Fans queued through the night in the hope of getting last-minute World Cup match tickets just released by FIFA. Another 180, 000 tickets were released at midnight on Wednesday. Many of these who endured the long uncomfortable wait were disappointed.

With just a week to the first game of the 2014 World Cup mass protests against the tournament are still happening in Brazil. An estimated 12,000 members of the Homeless Workers' Movement and their supporters turned out for this one in Sao Paolo on Wednesday. They say they're angry at the expense of hosting the World Cup when basic services and affordable housing are still desperately needed.

An estimated 170,000 families have been removed from their homes to make way for work for the World Cup and for the Olympics which the country will host in 2016.

Police killed in Canada shooting
加拿大警察在槍擊事件中遇難
A gunman shot dead three police officers at this spot in the Canadian city of Moncton. Two others were wounded. The confrontation erupted as the officers were searching for a man carrying a rifle and wearing combat clothing.

Two other officers were also injured but their life is not threatened at this time. At this precise moment we are still actively looking for the shooter. He is believed to still be in the Pinehurst subdivision area of Moncton. We are urging the people who live in that area to stay inside and lock their doors and to the people to stay away from that area if they don't have to be in there."

Police have named 24-year-old Justin Bourque as the suspect they're looking for. What led to the bloodshed was not immediately clear. Such incidents are relatively rare in Canada which has stricter gun laws than the United States.

Thirty-four injured in fire that destroyed New York apartment house

A rare five-alarm fire leaves 23 firefighters injured on New York's Staten Island. It broke out in this apartment house early Thursday. It was so intense, one desperate man, trapped inside, reportedly dropped his two young children out the second story window into this neighbor's arms.

SOUNDBITE: NEIGHBOR ANTHONY DISIMONE SAYING: "You panic at first. It's a normal human trait. You just try and focus on what's important. Just like if I was up there with my child he would have done the same for me. You really don't think to much you just act."

Some 200 firefighters battled the fire, which also injured 11 civilians. Officials say the blaze destroyed the apartment house and spread to neighboring buildings. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
