Obama focuses on jobs in weekly address

In his weekly address, U.S. President Barack Obama is focusing on jobs as he calls on Congress to back plans to boost employment.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "In the 2000s alone, we lost more than one-third of all American manufacturing jobs. One in three. And when the housing bubble burst, workers in the construction industry were hit harder than just about anybody. The good news is, today, our manufacturers have added more than 620,000 jobs over the last four years - the first sustained growth in manufacturing jobs since the 1990s."

Obama is calling on Congress to back plans to create high-tech manufacturing hubs and infrastructure projects.

And while Congress decides what it's going to do, I'm going to keep doing everything in my power to rebuild an economy where everyone who works hard has the chance to get ahead - where we're restoring our founding vision of opportunity for all."

Obama has said he will pay for the new spending "by cutting unnecessary spending and closing wasteful tax loopholes."

Dam crack in Washington raises breach concerns

A 65-foot long and two-inch wide crack in the Wanapum Dam in Washington state is raising concerns of a potential breach. Divers have reportedly looked at the crack from underwater and inspectors are trying to decipher whether there is a threat of a potential breach. Authorities are trying to find a fix.

Officials are monitoring the crack for any signs of movement, but the dam is apparently producing enough power to supply local customers.

Kiev residents critical of Russian moves to send troops to Crimea

In the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, residents react to the latest news in their nation's conflict. Russia voted on Saturday to approve sending its troops into Ukraine's eastern region of Crimea, where there's an ethnic Russian majority.
在烏克蘭首都基輔,居民們對國家沖突的最新消息作出反應 。周六,俄羅斯投票贊成向烏克蘭東部克里米亞地區派遣軍隊,這里居住的大部分都是俄羅斯少數民族成員 。

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he needs to protect Russian citizens in Crimea and other security interests for Moscow. But residents here are largely critical of the move, and especially of Putin himself.

A months-long conflict in Ukraine seemed to end when protesters toppled from power their Moscow-backed president. Now the crisis has moved firmly into Crimea. It threatens to become the biggest direct confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.
