Ice storm moves to US north

From eastern Texas to the Carolinas, the US has been pelted with ice, sleet and snow, wreaking havoc in the south. Now the deadly winter storm is threatening to pummel the eastern seaboard. More than 350,000 people are without power in the south and thousands of flights have been cancelled because of ice and strong winds. Many have been left stranded as transport comes to a standstill. The roads are nearly deserted as drivers heed warnings to stay inside. At least nine deaths have already been blamed on the storm. Three of them were killed when an ambulance slid off an icy Texas road and caught fire. North Carolina and Virginia are bracing for up to 30 cm of snow. The National Weather Service said it was a storm of "historical proportions"....but history aside most kids are happy to take advantage of a snow day away from school.

11 killed in Karachi blast

At least 11 police officers and dozens of people were wounded in this attack in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi. An explosion ripped through two police vehicles in Razzaqabad, near a police training centre. Police cordoned off the site, as officials examined the wreckage, collecting debris for clues into who was responsible for the blast. There were more than 45 personnel on the bus on their way to resume duties. Ambulances moved the wounded to Jinnah hospital for emergency treatment.

All of them are police trainees. All of them are injured. We also have dead bodies. Initially eight dead bodies were brought here. But now we have 11 dead confirmed. At least 10 among the injured are in a critical condition. They have head, upper torso and limb injuries."

Pakistan has been plagued by sectarian, ethnic and political violence for years. This attack comes just days after gunmen tossed hand grenades into the house of a deceased police officer in Peshawar, killing nine.

Hurricane-force winds and pelting rain are battering parts of the UK, that is already struggline to cope with record floods.A pensioner died trying to shift a tree felled by powerful winds. Winds of up to 160 kmph caused damage and destruction on the roads in the northwest. A truck is blown over on a bridge. Here along Blackpool promenade, lamps and flagpoles swayed precariously. The highest alert level has been issued for winds in Wales and northwest England. That comes on top of 16 severe flood warnings already in place. Parts of southwest England have been submerged for weeks. Water swept through flood defences leaving properties and gardens flooded.
