Syrians flee to Iraq on barges
Syrian refugees are arriving on Iraq's riverbanks, riding barges. The Peshkhabour border point in Dohuk, about 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, reopened early this month. Syrians are allowed to cross for a few hours everyday and so far, some 4,500 have entered Iraq. The border was closed in September last year, following a mass influx of about 60,000 refugees in August, one of the largest outward migrations in the Syrian war. Thousands used to cross by a bridge, which is no longer in use. This time, the refugees pack into small barges and make a 20 minute journey across the Simelka River. While some are fleeing the conflict and hope to remain in Iraq's Kurdish region, others say they just want to pick up supplies and will soon return to Syria. The UNHCR says Iraq is hosting some 210,000 registered Syrian refugees, and that the re-opening of the Peshkhabour border has brought relief to thousands seeking to escape embattled Syria. Iraq itself, meanwhile, has more than 1 million internally displaced people, who fled sectarian violence.
The Countdown to the Sochi Winter Olympics is on - and with it comes increased security in the city. Russian cossacks patrol the streets in their traditional uniforms. They join an already inflated police presence. Enhanced security measures are in place, heightened since the deadly suicide bombings in Volgograd, just before the New Year. One resident says the increased security makes her feel safe.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SOCHI RESIDENT EVGENIYA PROKOPENKO, SAYING: "We have patrols of two policemen and two cossacks walking along the streets. And you can see those patrols almost every 150 meters (164 yd). When you drive through the center, there is a policeman at every stop. And it is good, but it is generally quiet here."
Russia imposed a security clampdown in Sochi to try to ensure the safety of the Games - a sworn target of the Chechen insurgent leader, Doku Umarov.

U.N. appeals for nearly $100 million for displaced persons in South Sudan, CAR
The United Nations has launched an appeal for nearly $100 million -- It's aimed at helping the hundreds of thousands of people displaced by humanitarian crises in South Sudan and the Central African Republic. According to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, the funds are for South Sudanese and Central Africans who are internally displaced as well as those fleeing for safety. Three weeks of fighting, often along ethnic lines, is raising international concern that the conflict could spiral into a full-blown civil war. The U.N. estimates some 43,000 South Sudanese have fled to neighboring countries, and it fears the number could rise to 125,000.
