Argentina rocked by looting, violence

Argentina on Monday appeared gripped by crime. This was the scene in Concordia where one person was killed and at least 40 injured as looters descended on local businesses. In Mar de Plata, the targets were wide-ranging --- sportswear shops,electronics stores and supermarkets. The latest victim was reportedly electrocuted as they tried to enter a store in the early morning. It's the third deadly looting incident in a week. All of this takes place as police here strike to demand higher wages. Officer Leandro Cout?o says the situation has gotten out of hand.

A Wintry storm bearing down across the country with a messy mix of snow, rain and wind is expected to continue to cause problems across the nation Tuesday. Monday was a slower commute than normal in the Washington, D.C. area. Ice caused power lines and trees to topple, triggering power outages and closing many schools. Now there are worries Tuesday could end up being a whole lot worse thanks to a new storm sweeping in from the Southwest. Forecasters say up to a half-foot of snow could fall Tuesday between Baltimore and Washington. That could cause a ripple effect at the nation's airports where 1,400 flights were already cancelled Monday and 3,200 were cancelled Sunday. Wintry weather also continues to plague much of the country from New England through Pennsylvania - to Dallas, Denver and Arkansas - which all remain in a deep freeze.

Brotherhood leader in court, Cairo clears up after clashes

Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie appeared in court for the first time since he was arrested, following the army's overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi. Badie faces charges that include inciting violence during a Brotherhood sit-in at Cairo University, mid-July. He defiantly has denied that the group had turned to violence. After the court appearance, Badie's defense lawyer spoke to reporters:

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DEFENCE LAWYER, MOHAMED EL-DAMATY, SAYING: "We requested that the accused be released on bail. The second request was to postpone the case in order to review the evidence. And the court postponed the case until February 11, when they will hear witness testimony and also in order to have time to review the case documents."

Violence erupted earlier in the day, when police fired tear gas at Mursi supporters demonstrating at a university. A witness said three police vehicles were set on fire and at least 58 students were arrested.
