Main opposition party in Bangladesh begins three day strike

Bangladesh's main opposition party -- the BNP -- launched a three-day strike on Sunday. It's demanding a caretaker government during the nation's upcoming national elections. Former Prime Minister and Party chairperson Khaleda Zia says there'll be no election while the current Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, is still in charge. BNP Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi:

The ruling Awami League Party has decided to oppose the strike, by organizing its own rallies. The mounting tension threatens Bangladesh's $22 billion garment export industry. It's the economic lifeblood of this developing nation of 160 million people; a country that's already been rocked by a string of deadly factory accidents over the past year.

Hundreds march in Washington against NSA spying

Several thousand protesters in the U.S. marched to the D.C. Capitol, demanding a limit to the government's surveillance programmes. Some of the demonstrators held banners in support of Edward Snowden, the former contractor who revealed the extent of the National Security Agency's spying activities. The march attracted protesters across the political spectrum.

The demonstration was organized by a coalition known as "Stop Watching Us", that consists of around 100 public advocacy groups and individuals urging Congress to reform the way the NSA gathers intelligence. But despite these protests, the Obama administration says gathering online data secretly is crucial in protecting the U.S. and thwarting militant plots.

Rock musician Lou Reed dead at 71
搖滾界元老Lou Reed去世 享年71歲
He was a pioneer in the rock and roll industry. The frontman for the legendary band "Velvet Underground." Rolling Stone is reporting singer-songwriter Lou Reed died on Sunday. The cause of death is unknown, but the 71-year-old underwent a liver transplant earlier this year. The influential rock pioneer began his career with the "Velvet Underground" in the 1960s. The band was known for its collaborative work with artist Andy Warhol. Reed went on to have a successful solo career, never giving up his love for the guitar. His continued to write songs and perform on stage up to his death.
