Death toll from Philippines quake nears 100, more people missing

The central Philippines more closely resembed a war zone after a powerful earthquake struck the islands of Cebu and Bohol.Buildings have been toppled, roads are potholed and bridges have collapsed.... The 7.2 magnitude quake has caused landslides and widespread damage to infrastructure, made worse by more than 800 aftershocks. The death toll is nearing 100 and the number is only expected to rise. Shops have run out of food and water as the roads to many villages are still cut off.

This historic church has been reduced to rubble but still rescuers continue to dig in search of more victims. The last time a quake of similar magnitude hit Bohol province was in 1602.

Typhoon Wipha leaves 14 dead in Japan

Typhoon Wipha has pummelled central Japan, bringing stong winds, record rainfall, landslides and flooding. At least 14 people have died and more than 50 people are missing. Many of the dead were buried in mudslides or crushed as buildings collapsed.Izu Oshima was in the direct path of the typhoon, triggering a landslide that caused part of a volcano to cave-in, destroying more than 30 homes. At the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, operators pumped out rain water near storage tanks contaminated by radiation.

Iran presents proposal on nuclear standoff

At the start of talks in Geneva with six world powers - Iran presents its proposals - aimed at a breakthrough over its disputed nuclear program. Details of the Iranian's proposals were not available - but Michael Mann - the spokesman for the European Union's foreign policy chief - said there was a sense of quote: "cautious optimism."
