Paris bank hostage-taker surrenders, leaves building

A Paris hostage standoff comes to an end. French police whisked away an armed suspect on Friday after he released the last of four hostages he was holding inside a bank and surrendered to authorities. Earlier, police blocked off the Avenue des Gobelins in southern Paris. That's where the hostage-taker occupied a branch of the CIC bank, demanding public housing for himself and his handicapped son, police said. A police spokesman said the surrender was without incident.

My colleagues made the most of that to go inside, and took into custody this person, who surrendered. There was no violence or gun fire, none of that."

The wildfires raging through New South Wales have already destroyed at least 100 homes near Sydney. On Friday Australian authorities were warning more properties were likely to fall victim as the fires burned out of control.

At least one person's died as a result of the fires, a 63-year-old man who had a heart attack as he tried to defend his home. About 100 fires are burning in New South Wales, fanned by unusually high temperatures and strong winds. About a third are still uncontained. Thousands of people spent Thursday night in evacuation centres on the outskirts of the city.

Federal employees returned to work Thursday (October 17) after Congress reached a last-minute deal to end the 16-day government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling. A stand-off between Republicans and the White House over funding the government forced the temporary lay-off of hundreds of thousands of federal workers from October 1 and created concern that crisis-driven politics was the "new normal" in Washington. "Using the government shutdown as a bargaining chip is wrong. And I think we all know who brought that up and initiated it," said Mark Crystal, an employee of the National Museum of the American Indian.

The deal offered only a temporary fix and did not resolve the fundamental issues of spending and deficits that divide Republicans and Democrats. It funds the government until January 15, so Americans face the possibility of another government shutdown early next year. Brian Varine, a Department of Energy employee, hoped lawmakers could avoid a future political battle. "They need to get together and figure out what they are going to do. And instead of painting the other guy as the bad guy, they just need to figure out, ok, what are we going to do, so we'll see what happens. I'm optimistic, but not that optimistic."
