Hundreds die in Pakistan quake
巴基斯坦發(fā)生7.8級地震 數(shù)百人遇難
These were the scenes of devastation after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Baluchistan province in Pakistan on Tuesday. By 1100 GMT on Wednesday authorities said at least 208 people had been killed. The quake reduced hundreds of mud houses to rubble. Communications to the worst-affected areas were wiped out. The quake was felt across South Asia. Pakistani broadcaster Geo tv said it was so powerful it caused a small island to emerge just off the coastline near the epicentre. It aired still pictures and video of people on a beach looking out to the land mass in the Arabian Sea.

British women admit Peru drug charges

Britons Michaella McCollum Connolly and Melissa Reid arrive at court in the Peruvian capital to face drugs charges. It was a brief appearance. The pair pleaded guilty to drug trafficking. The women, both aged 20, were held at Lima airport in August after cocaine worth 2.3 million dollars was found in their luggage. They said an armed gang had forced them to take the drugs to Peru against their will. The women are due to appear in court again next month. They'll be sentenced at a further hearing after that. The lead prosecutor in the case says they face jail terms of nearly seven years. But officials say there's a chance they could be allowed to serve out their sentences in the UK.

Kenyan president says militants "defeated"

"I had vowed earlier, we have ashamed and defeated our attackers." Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta says that the al Shabaab militants that went on a brutal rampage at a Nairobi mall have been defeated. But its unclear whether the four-day security operation at the upmarket Westgate center is completely over. There are still questions about whether any militants are still at large or hostages unaccounted for. Some of the victims are recounting their ordeal including a Kenyan couple who were helping to run a cooking competition.

They weren't shooting to scare, they were shooting to kill. They aimed low to where the people were crouching, and they just opened fire, completely and absolutely."

(SOUNDBITE)(English) ALEEM MANJI, SAYING: "There were Muslims around me who got gunned down, who died, Ruhila my co-host, she died, she was seven months pregnant, she bled to death. This is not a religious thing, never was, this is not the religion that I grew up with.

Sixty-one civilians and six security personnel were killed in the four days of bloodshed. Five of the attackers were shot dead and 11 suspects are custody. al Shabaab said its militants are still holding out at the mall and their hostages were still alive.
