Euro zone optimism, despite unemployment
歐元區經濟形勢樂觀
There's growing optimism about the euro zone's economy, according to the latest survey by the European Commission. Based on orders and companies' hiring plans, business managers' confidence increased 2.7 points to 95.2. The trend was particularly strong in Germany and the Netherlands, but also in Italy, France and Spain. It's the latest in a stream of positive data from the region which is leading some to say the worst of the crisis may be over. Michael Metcalfe is Head of macro strategy at State Street.

Nonetheless, unemployment remains at a record high - unchanged from the previous month at 12.1 percent.

I think that's the one that the policy response in terms of whatever it takes got rid of the risk premium but they haven't yet met that challenge and theywill need to do so." Part of that challenge will be addressing the gulf between the recovering north and the struggling south-with almost 7 percent unemployment in Germany, but a whopping 28 percent in Greece.

UN inspectors are taking no chances as they searched for proof that chemicals weapons were used to kill hundreds of civilians. It's day three of their probe and western powers are anxious for the group to offer a definitive answer. British Prime Minister David Cameron rejected suggestions the UK is poised to strike.

No action can be taken until we have heard from the UN weapons inspectors, until there has been further action at the United Nations and another vote in this house, those are the conditions that we the British government, the British parliament are setting and I think it is absolutely right that we do so."

His remarks come as British fighter jets began arriving at this airbase in Cyprus which is just 124 miles- or 200 kilometers--from the Syrian coast. British Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has this to say about the move.

North Korea executes leader's ex

The ex-girlfriend of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un -- seen here taking notes for Kim in 2012 -- has reportedly been executed by firing squad. South Korean newspaper Chosn Ilbo reported Thursday that Hyon Song-wol and other performers were put to death on August 20 over pornography charges. They were accused of selling sex tapes of themselves and some of them allegedly possessed bibles, which is a political crime in the repressive state. File footage from North Korea's state TV showed a woman believed to be Hyon standing behind Kim Jong-un and his wife at a concert in July 2012. The South Korean newspaper said Kim and Hyon met about 10 years ago, but his father, Kim Jong-il, disapproved of their relationship and ordered it to end.
