Egyptian court orders Mubarak's release
埃及法庭下令釋放穆巴拉克
An Egyptian court has ordered former President Hosni Mubarak's release from jail, his lawyer said. The court met here at Tora prison, where Mubarak is being held, to review a legal petition demanding his freedom, said judicial sources. This means the 85 year old could leave prison on Thursday, as there are no longer any legal grounds for his detention. After 30 years as Egyptian president, Mubarak was arrested soon after his overthrow in February 2011. He became the first leader in the so-called Arab Spring to face trial. Charges ranged from corruption to complicity in the murder of protesters. Mubarak is being retried on charges of ordering the killing of demonstrators during the uprising that led to his downfall. However, he has already served the maximum amount of pretrial detention permitted. Egypt's prosecutor said he will not appeal the release order.

Sentenced to 35 years in prison for the biggest breach of secret data in U.S. history, soldier Bradley Manning spoke through his defense attorney in a statement to reporters, indicating he intends to ask President Barack Obama for a pardon.

The 25-year-old showed no emotion as the judge in Fort Meade, Maryland, read his sentence on Wednesday (August 21). A pardon request from Manning would be treated the same as all others, White House spokesman Josh Earnest says.

The images are hard to watch. But the number, too, is confounding. THIRTEEN-HUNDRED people reported killed in chemical attacks on several Damascus suburbs by Syrian government forces. Accusations the government has strongly denied. Speaking on Syrian TV, a military command spokesman said reports and video of the attacks were the product of sedition and misinformation.

Video footage of the attacks, though still unverified, shows people choking, some foaming at the mouth. Syria agreed in theory two weeks ago to let U.N. inspectors travel to Syria to investigate the possible use of chemical weapons in its protracted civil war. On Wednesday, the U.N. announced that the departure of the investigative team is "now imminent."
